A key factor in deciding how many worms to order is the top surface area of your bin. Depending on conditions, worms will feed only in the top 8" of bedding. If you are just starting out with a new bin, a good rule of thumb is to introduce 1/2 pound of worms for every square foot of bedding.
For example, if the top surface of your worm bin is 60 x 70 inches, the surface area would be 420 square inches which is almost 3 square feet. Multiply 3 square feet by .5 pounds of worms-- you'll need a pound and a half of worms.
Yes, but mostly no. Earth worms, or night crawlers, are soil inhabitants just as red wigglers. Both varieties ingest, break down, and expel castings. BUT, the red wiggler is voracious and consumes decaying material to generate significantly greater beneficial micro-organisms, enzymes, humus, and plant stimulants than regular night crawlers.
